When must my letter go out? Swiss notice deadline calculator
Pick your case. The calculator shows the date by which your notice must reach the recipient and the last day to post it by registered mail or A-Post. For a notice of termination, arrival counts, not the postmark. We calculate cautiously: Monday to Friday only, without public holidays.

Cautious calculation: registered mail 2 working days and A-Post 2 working days before arrival, Monday to Friday only. The reasons are below.
Letterino prints, envelopes and hands your letter to Swiss Post, registered from CHF 11.50. We cannot promise an arrival date: delivery is done by Swiss Post. The letter is written in German.
After that: contract end 31 December 2027, arrival by 30 November 2027.
Why this date?
When your insurer announces the new premium, you can cancel basic insurance with one month’s notice to the end of the month before the new premium applies (Art. 7(2) KVG/LAMal). The new premium applies from 1 January, so the notice must reach the insurer by 30 November; the postmark does not count. This also applies with a GP or telemedicine model and a higher deductible. If 30 November falls on a weekend, the FOPH requires arrival on the Friday before. The FOPH (Priminfo) recommends sending the notice by 15 November by registered mail or A-Post Plus.

How we calculate
- Arrival at the recipient counts, not the postmark. If the last day falls on a weekend or public holiday, we use the working day before, as the FOPH and the tenants’ association require.
- Registered mail: Swiss Post delivers on the next working day, Monday to Friday. We add one working day, because an uncollected registered letter usually counts as received only on the day after the pick-up notice (BGE 137 III 208). For flats we count 3 working days, as the tenants’ association recommends.
- A-Post: Swiss Post delivers on the next working day, including Saturdays. We still count Monday to Friday only, with one working day in reserve. With A-Post you cannot prove arrival.
- Public holidays: those valid in all of Switzerland (New Year’s Day, Ascension, 1 August, Christmas) and, if you choose a canton, its holidays according to the Federal Office of Justice and SECO. Where sources differ, we count the day as a holiday. Municipal holidays are not included.
- Swiss Post has no fixed posting cut-off time; it differs by post office and postbox. Post the letter on the day shown before the last collection.
- Letterino: orders placed on a working day before 11:45 are usually handed to Swiss Post the same day.
Frequently asked questions
Does the postmark or arrival count?
Arrival. For health insurance the FOPH says so explicitly: what counts is the day the insurer receives the notice, not the postmark. The same applies to flats and jobs: the notice must be with the recipient before the notice period starts.
What if the last day falls on a weekend?
Count with the working day before. In 2025 the FOPH required arrival on Friday 28 November because 30 November was a Sunday; the tenants’ association says the same for Saturdays and holidays. A shift of a notice deadline to the Monday is not guaranteed.
Registered mail or A-Post?
For deadlines, registered mail: you get a tracking number and proof of delivery. With A-Post you cannot prove when the letter arrived. For health insurance the FOPH also mentions A-Post Plus (with tracking).
What if the recipient does not collect the registered letter?
Swiss Post keeps it for 7 days. According to the Federal Supreme Court, a notice usually counts as received on the day after the pick-up notice (BGE 137 III 208), but there are other opinions. So send it early enough.
By when must I order at Letterino?
Orders placed on a working day before 11:45 are usually handed to Swiss Post the same day. The calculator shows that day for registered mail. We cannot promise an arrival date: delivery is done by Swiss Post.
Does 30 November also apply to supplementary insurance?
No. Supplementary insurance has its own notice periods under the policy, often 3 months to the end of the year. Choose “Supplementary insurance” and enter the end date and notice period.
